The City of Bonifay is located in Holmes County Florida. We are located in the Florida Panhandle about 45 miles north of Panama City Beach, about 45 miles southwest of Dothan Alabama, approximately 100 miles East of Pensacola and approximately 100 miles West of Tallahassee.

Bonifay became a town when the railroad was built through in 1882 and was named for Judge Frank Bonifay, an official with the railroad company.

In 1886, G. W. Banfill surveyed one square mile and platted the town on a map.† He named the streets for the states of our country and the main street (Hwy. 79) of Bonifay in honor of his home town Ė Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Bonifay was designated the county seat in 1905 after Cerro Gordo and Westville.

The Holmes County Advertiser was established in 1907 by the W. D. Williams family.† Today it is still housed in the same building located on Virginia Avenue just off Waukesha Street.

The first Mayor was T. J. Daughtrey in 1907.

The City of Bonifay was incorporated in 1921.

The population of Bonifay according to the 2000 Census was 4,078.
